Advocates want more male teachers

CHATTANOOGA (AP) - Advocates say more male teachers are needed in elementary schools.

Education has historically been female-dominated, with most male teachers concentrated in upper grades.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports advocates say male teachers bring a different perspective to the job, connect better with some students and provide positive male role models for children.

For example, Rick Hall teaches third grade at Wallace A. Smith Elementary in Chattanooga and his classroom has a boy's touch. It includes a wooden fort with camouflage netting as a reading area. Book shelves include Sports Illustrated for Kids and students are allowed to move around while trying to figure out math problems.
