Newport three-year-old drowns in backyard pool

NEWPORT (WATE) - A Newport toddler died Saturday afternoon in a drowning accident.

Witnesses called 911 just before 3 p.m. to report a possible child death.

Police responded to a house on Cambridge Drive to find a child screaming that another child had drowned in the backyard.

After running to the back of the house, officers found Hunter Frazier, 3, laying unconscious on the back of the deck near the pool.

A doctor and two officers performed CPR until an ambulance arrived at the home.

Witnesses told police the boy was riding a four-wheeler in the yard with other children when they went inside.

They said they were inside for less than a minute and when they came outside, the boy was missing.

That's when one woman noticed the boy floating in the pool. Another woman jumped in and retrieved his body.

The boy's mother said she was in the basement of the house at the time of the incident.

Hunter was taken to Newport Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
