KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knoxville worker was seriously injured Wednesday when he was burned by chemicals on the job.

Around 5:15 p.m., firefighters responded to the United DMS facility at 3006 Industrial Drive for a report of a small explosion and fire.

Upon arrival, fire crews found no fire, but instead found a man with burns from a solution of steam, sodium hydroxide and lime, which is used to separate silver from expired medical x-rays.

The man was taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center second and third degree burns to the
majority of his body.
