LAKE CITY (WATE) – What is being called the largest fire in Lake City's history is now being investigated as an arson.

Flames destroyed a warehouse of Dixie Roofing Company Saturday afternoon in Lake City's industrial park.

Investigators think someone may have broken into the 37,000-square-foot building, then set the business on fire.

"I came out of the house and saw two boys run away," said C.J. Braden, who lives right by the site. "No one ever goes to that property.

Braden says that was the first sign of trouble.

"I heard crackling and popping, booming. All of a sudden there was smoke everywhere and I didn't know what was going on," he added.

Shingles, rubber products, and propane tanks were stored in the warehouse.

The fire brought 50 firefighters to the scene.

"When the fire started, it was so hot we couldn't get anyone inside," Lake City Fire Chief Sam Bailey said.

One firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation.

Fire crews were called back to the warehouse Monday because flames rekindled.

Investigators were also there looking for more clues.

In addition to what Braden reported seeing, investigators say there are other things to indicate the cause is arson.

"When we got here, the back door was open. And the guy here says the facility is always locked up," Chief Bailey said.
