CHATTANOOGA (WATE) - Tennessee will play UT Chattanooga in football next season for the first time in forty-five years and if new athletics director David Blackburn gets his way, it may happen more often.
The former Tennessee athletics department staff member was introduced as Chattanooga's new athletics on Tuesday.
"It's been so quick I haven't been able to ask them for games yet but I agree with that, I think it would be good for us to play Tennessee," Blackburn said.
"I think it will help. I need to go ahead and call (Tennessee athletics director) Dave (Hart) when we leave here and go ahead and ask him right away," he said with a grin.
Blackburn spent 20 years in Tennessee athletics working under Doug Dickey, Mike Hamilton and Dave Hart.
The East Tennessee native has been a candidate for other AD positions around the country, but finally landed the big job at a school not far from home.
He takes over for Rick Hart, who left to take the AD job at SMU.
"I think there is a lot of potential here. Rick did a wonderful job. Things are in good shape. I think the potential for growth is really there. That combined with just wanting to be here makes me feel energetic and I distribute my passion in that way."
