Hawkins County teen charged with spoofing school email accounts

Posted:

ROGERSVILLE (WATE) - A Hawkins County 17-year-old is accused of faking school administrators' email accounts in an attempt to close schools.

The Hawkins County Sheriff's Office says the teen created fake email messages from Hawkins County Schools Director Charlotte Britton and another school employee to falsely tell area TV news stations that classes had been canceled.

The incidents happened in early February.

During the sheriff's office investigation the teen was identified as a suspect and was arrested on Tuesday.

Authorities say the teen has admitted he used an email spoofing website to make it appear the school administrators had sent emails announcing the schools had been closed.

The teen faces two counts of criminal impersonation.
