GATLINBURG (WATE) - Park officials in the Smokies have set the dates for a popular summer attraction.

The Elkmont Firefly Viewing will take place June 6 through June 13.

Thousands of visitors gather each summer near the Elkmont Campground to observe the naturally occurring phenomenon of Photinus carolinus, a firefly species that flashes synchronously.

The park is distributing a limited number of passes through Recreation.gov and will also offer 90 additional passes the day before the event.

The first passes will be available online beginning Monday, April 29 at 10 a.m.
