NEWPORT (WATE) - A former school bus driver facing DUI charges appeared in court Wednesday following her arrest last month.

The Cocke County Sheriff's Office says deputies found Cheryl Hembree, 39, drinking a beer inside a running school bus.

They say she was about to pick up children.

Hembree pleaded guilty to first offense DUI. She will serve less than 48 hours in jail, be on probation for a year, have alcohol and drug counseling, pay a $350 fine and have a breathalyzer installed in her car.

Her lawyer, Marcos Garza, said Hembree knew she made a big mistake and wanted to take responsibility for her actions and put this behind her.

She is scheduled to report to jail on May 7.
