KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A woman was attacked Wednesday night during a bungled attempt to carjack her vehicle in Knoxville.

Police say the man tried to steal the woman's car just before 8:40 p.m. at Dollar General, 4112 Asheville Hwy.

The suspect approached a female store employee as she closed the store for the evening, then demanded the keys to her vehicle.

The woman told police he pointed a black handgun at her.

Before she could give the suspect he keys, he pushed her to the ground and hit her in the head with the gun. He then took her keys and entered her car.

That's things went bad for the would-be carjacker.

In his first attempt to start the car he opened the trunk. In his second attempt the lights flashed.

Failing to drive away the suspect fled on foot toward the rear of the store.

Officers searched the area, but the suspect was not located.

He is described as a tall, thin male, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a white mask.

The investigation is ongoing.
