Sweetwater crash sends 6 to hospital, 2 to jail

SWEETWATER (WATE) - A high-speed chase ends in a multiple vehicle wreck and two men charged with separate crimes.

Officers were responding to a call around 7:30 Friday night of a man pointing a gun at several family members, including children, in a vehicle.

When police arrived, they say the suspect, 34-year-old Steven Carter, sped off and then crashed into two other vehicles on Highway 322.

Six people, including Carter, were taken to area hospitals. Conditions of the injured are not thought to be life-threatening.

After a search of Carter's vehicle yielding no firearms, police searched the neighborhood and found a silver pistol that Carter had thrown from the car.

Carter now faces several charges, including six counts of aggravated assault, felony evading arrest, and DUI.

The driver of a second vehicle involved in the crash, 45-year-old Gregory Yearwood, faces charges of DUI and possession of a second vehicle, after it was determined that the car he was driving had been reported missing out of Knox County.
