Police pull Oak Ridge man out of burning vehicle

OAK RIDGE (WATE) - A man has Oak Ridge Police to thank for pulling him out of a burning vehicle earlier this week.

Officers were responding to a single-vehicle crash on North Illinois Avenue at Irene Lane in Oak Ridge around 11:30 on Friday night.

Initial reports suggest that the man's vehicle left the roadway, striking multiple utility poles before catching fire and landing in an embankment.

Officer Christopher Wallace was on the scene within one minute of being dispatched -- that's when he discovered that the driver was unconscious and trapped inside the burning vehicle.

With the engine compartment fully engulfed in flames, Wallace directed responders to deploy fire extinguishers.

Several other officers arrived on scene, one of them-- Officer Ray Steakley, jerked the driver's side window at enough of an angle to access the driver's compartment, allowing officers to pull the driver through the window.

A total of 8 officers responded to the scene.

The driver was transported to UT Hospital by ambulance.
