KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Bearden business owners held a meeting Monday to discuss their opposition to closing Ben Atchley Street for a commercial development.

The one-block road in Bearden runs between Kingston Pike and Homberg Drive.

The Metropolitan Planning Commission (MPC) denied the developer's request to close the West Knoxville road last month.

However, the developer is appealing MPC's decision to Knoxville City Council.

Business owners say if the street is closed, their shops will feel the pinch.

"It's not good public policy to take public property that has a distinct and definite value and convey that property to a private person for his or her use or their private gain, as opposed to the interest of others affected by that," said Attorney John King.

The Knoxville City Council will consider the developer's appeal Tuesday.
