CORBIN, Ky. (WATE) - Officials are investigating after they discovered an explosive device on Sunday morning.

The Corbin Police Department responded around 3:15 a.m. to the area of Chestnut and Padgett Street after hearing what sounded like gunshots.

Chief David Campbell investigated the explosions and saw a male dressed in dark clothes fleeing the area on foot.

Officers searched the immediate area and found three hand grenade fuses lashed together with parachute cord, and the pins were removed.

Kentucky State Police took control of the device and said that they would detonate the makeshift device.

Officials said the grenade fuses would have had enough power to puncture a gas tank on an automobile.

The suspect or suspects could be charged with the use of weapon of mass destruction in the third degree.
