Christians, Newsoms request Baumgartner's TBI file

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The victims' parents in the Christian Newsom murders want to see ex-judge Richard Baumgartner's TBI file.

The Christian and Newsom families filed a petition with the court for access to the sealed records.

Baumgartner was the subject of an investigation in the days leading up to his admission that he was addicted to prescription painkillers.

That led to new trials for some of the convicted killers.

Chris Newsom's parents feel that since prosecutors and defense attorneys have seen the file, the victims' families should see them, too.

"I'm not sure what we'll find, but we should be allowed to see those files and gain knowledge as to what was taking place during that period of time. And we'll have to go from there," said Hugh Newsom.

Newsom also feels that Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood discriminated against the victims' families by allowing attorneys for the defense and the prosecution access to the files.

A new judge was later assigned to the retrials.
