People attend Knoxville events despite soggy Saturday weather

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The rain put a damper on the first part of the weekend, but it didn't stop everyone.

While many outdoor events were canceled or postponed because of the rain, others went on as planned.

Organizers at the Rev 3 event at World's Fair Park and the Street Rod Nationals South Plus say more people took advantage of Friday's sunshine rather than braving Saturday's rain.

"Evidently yesterday was the day to be here. It was sunny, and they said it was packed yesterday. Rain usually slows car people down, because there's a lot of guys that don't drive their cars or use their cars much, so it really scares them away," said street rod owner Josh Boles.

Most of the street rod owners in Knoxville for the event left Chilhowee Park early because of the rain.

While organizers for the Rev 3 race Sunday had the turnout they expected, athletes didn't stay outside long.

"All the athletes who are running tomorrow are required to come, so we've certainly had the turnout we normally expect, they're just not lingering around as long as they would, visiting our vendors and just sort of enjoying the day," explained race director Eric Opdyke.

But whether it's classic cars or a test of endurance, those who faced the rain say they'll do the same Sunday.

"Part of triathlon is just being tough. Strong-minded. You know it's not always going to be sunshine and nice weather, so we spend a lot of money, time and dedication to this sport and so you just want to show up for the race and do the best for that day, given whatever the circumstances are," said tri-athletes Steve and Pam McGowan.

"We spend countless hours working on our vehicles just to do things like this, participate in these kind of activities and we're not going to let a little bit of rain stop us," explained Joshua Kaylor.

About 5,000 people are expected to attend the Rev 3 Triathlon Sunday. That number includes athletes and spectators.
