DUFF (WATE) - Opened for its fourth season in 2013, Campbell County's McCloud Mountain has a lot to offer.

Co-owner Scott Fields says his family bought the property in the 1980s, and they "used it as our own private retreat for several years."

Family members wanted to eventually honor the dream of the mountain's namesake, Jim McCloud.

"Mr. McCloud was a little ahead of his time. He had a dream of making this place a retreat for vacationers. He carved the original road out of dirt and rock, " Fields said.

Jim McCloud passed away before he realized his dream, but that dream is now reality.

Eleven guest rooms offer top luxury. Each has a spectacular view of Powell Valley below, but Fields says you will also find "heated floors in the bathroom, satellite, flat screen television, just anything we could think of to make you comfortable away from home."

It's a nice weekend getaway, but many people drive up just for the restaurant. In addition to more views, it offers "lots of salads, steaks, and prime rib every night on the menu."

If you have time to explore, the sky bridge is a new feature that just opened this year.

"There are 36 natural rock chimneys that stand up to 200 feet tall," Fields said, "and we decided that we would create a way you could walk out across them, and everyone can enjoy them."

McCloud Mountain also offers miles of hiking trails, several waterfalls, and some natural rock formations including two natural rock bridges.

It's a trip away from it all, but right here at home.

"It's quiet here. There aren't big crowds and there never will be huge crowds," Fields said.

He says that's one of the things he likes the most about his mountain home. "More than anything, it's just sitting and appreciating nature, just looking out at the view."

McCloud Mountain is open from March through December. For more information, visit mtcloud.com.
