KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Urban Outfitters opened last week, but held its grand opening celebration Saturday.

Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero says the new business is a sign of economic growth.

The new store is bringing its own foot traffic to downtown Knoxville.

"I haven't really been down here a lot except for the Square Room, but then when Urban Outfitters opened, I've probably been down here more often," said shoppers Meagan Alford and Megan Chang.

Mayor Rogero says the new store could help local shops nearby.

"One of the things that makes Knoxville unique are our locally owned small authentic stores, which are just wonderful. They've been here. We'll continue to support them. Having the vitality of an Urban Outfitters will bring more people downtown to the smaller stores as well, so I think it'll be very complementary to what we're doing downtown," Mayor Rogero explained.

People 6 News spoke with who headed downtown to see Urban Outfitters Saturday afternoon say they visited several of the shops on Market Square as well.

"People want to see what else is around, just like Urban Outfitters. And they're already down here so I don't know, I think it's a plus," said Chang and Alford.

Fizz on Market Square say it's too soon to tell how having the large retailer nearby will affect its sales, but that being a local shop draws a lot of customers on its own.

"I think people also really want to support the local market, especially in Knoxville. Downtown, we try to keep it all locally made and support local artisans and stuff," said Fizz sales associate Jillian Parhan.

A representative from Urban Outfitters said the store has received a positive response from the community and nearby small businesses.
