Jefferson Co. man fires shotgun at officers; authorities shut down road

WHITE PINE (WATE) - Officials arrested a man Saturday night who fired a shotgun at officers, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

A Jefferson County sheriff's deputy went to a home at 3291 Roy Messer Highway around 3 p.m. for a welfare check. He found the gate to the residence closed.

Authorities said that as the officer was waiting, resident Dana Morelock came to the door and began to curse the deputy before firing at him with a pistol.

The officer took cover while backup arrived. Morelock continued to fire at police with a shotgun until the Special Operation Response Team secured the area.

After the team deployed pepper gas, Morelock surrendered and was taken into custody around 7:30 p.m.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and White Pine Police assisted in shutting down the highway.
