KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Savings can be found all year at the grocery store, but there are a number of reasons to shop carefully in the summer.

Knoxville mom Melissa Cox, who writes a money-saving blog called Frugalissa Finds, shared some of her tips for finding the best deals in the summer.

She says many summer specific items will be on sale that can be used year-round, so it is a good time to stock up. These items include drink mixes like Crystal Light, chips, hot dogs, condiments, and paper plates. They all go on sale and can be frozen or stored for later use.

The best deals on meat happen around Memorial Day. Meat can be frozen for about three months once you get it home.

According to Cox, you should not pass up sale events.

"Right here, this is some fabric softener which is a 'Mega Event.' It's 3.99 if you buy four participating items. Now, there is a misconception and a lot of confusion. People don't realize it's 'Buy four participating items.' You don't have to buy four fabric softeners. It could be fabric softeners, toothpaste. It could be a food item and you are just piecing those together," says Cox.

Cox says one of her biggest reminders is not to fall into the trap of convenience.

Buy bigger items that save money on the unit price, like meat and cheese. You can buy the larger quantities and rebag them at home.
