Knox Heritage releases Fragile 15 list

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Historic preservation group Knox Heritage released 2013's list of the most endangered historic structures in the Knox County.

Every May during National Preservation Month, Knox Heritage releases the list to educate the public and local leaders about significant historic resources that are in danger of being lost.

Knox Heritage announced the list at the Kennedy-Baker-Walker-Sherrill House in West Knoxville. The home was formerly listed on the Fragile 15 list, but was recently purchased and is being restored for use as office space.

The structures selected for this year's Fragile 15 list:

1. Historic Fort Sanders Neighborhood

Representative Properties:
a. Fort Sanders Houses & Grocery - 307 18th Street, 1802, 1804, & 1810 Highland Avenue
b. White Avenue Houses – 1302, 1308, & 1312 White Avenue
c. The Pickle Mansion – 1633 Clinch Avenue

2. Kern's Bakery Building – 2110 Chapman Highway

3. Standard Knitting Mill – 1400 Washington Avenue

4. French Broad River Corridor

5. Tennessee Supreme Court Building – 617 Cumberland Avenue

6. Martin-Russell House – 11409 Kingston Pike

7. Historic Knox County School Buildings

Representative Properties:
a. South High School – 801 Tipton Avenue
b. Rule High School – 1901 Vermont Avenue
c. Knoxville High School – 101 E. Fifth Avenue

8. The McClung Warehouses – 501-525 W. Jackson Avenue

9. Magnolia Avenue Corridor

Representative Properties:
a. Magnolia Avenue United Methodist Church – 2700 E. Magnolia Avenue
b. Rabbit & Poultry Barn – Chilhowee Park - 3301 E. Magnolia Avenue

10. University of Tennessee Knoxville Campus

Representative Properties:
a. Sophronia Strong Hall & Cafeteria -1621 Cumberland Avenue
b. Melrose Hall – 1616 Melrose Avenue
c. Henson Hall – 1618 Cumberland Avenue
d. The Weston Fulton Residence – 900 Volunteer Blvd.

11. The Eugenia Williams House – 4848 Lyons View Pike

12. Cal Johnson Building – 301 State Street

13. Isaac Anderson Cabin – Creekrock Lane – Shannondale Valley Farms

14. The Lloyd Branson House – 1423 Branson Avenue

15. Sanitary Laundry & Dry Cleaning Building – 625 N. Broadway

The properties included on the list are selected by the Knox Heritage Board of Directors from nominations received from members of Knox Heritage and the general public.
