Roane County tea party group members head to Washington over IRS scandal

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Members of a Roane County conservative group flew to Washington, D.C. Wednesday ahead of a federal hearing into a recent scandal involving the IRS.

The agency has recently come under scrutiny for revelations that auditors were targeting conservative political groups that sought tax-exempt status and subjected them to additional questioning.

Co-chairs Gary Johnston and Val McNabb with the Roane County group Tea Party Patriots left the Knoxville area on Wednesday morning.

They were called on by the Tea Party Patriots, who heard the Roane County party was one of the political groups that faced extra scrutiny by the IRS.

Johnston and McNabb will be attending a hearing by the U.S. House Ways and Means committee at 9 a.m. Friday.

Johnston and McNabb told 6 News Wednesday they aren't sure if they will be called to testify during the meeting.
