POWELL (WATE) - As many pet owners know, taking care of beloved dogs and cats can get expensive.

Unfortunately, that high cost of care forces some to put off the procedures their pets need.

But one local vet clinic is trying to change that, by working hard to meet the needs of pet owners on a budget.

Helping pets live long and healthy lives is what Powell Animal Hospital is all about.

That's why the staff became so concerned when more and more clients recently started turning down recommended annual bloodwork, which can be costly.

"They were doing what they had to do, like vaccines and heartworm tests, but the recommended bloodwork they weren't able to do," said Dr. Ashley Walker, a veterinarian at Powell.

Dr. Walker said that was when she and the other veterinarians knew they had to make a change.

"It breaks our heart when they say they can't afford it and you know that we may really be missing something," said Walker.

Powell Animal Hospital used to conduct their own bloodwork in house or send it to a massive outside lab.

But over the last month, they've started sending the blood profiles to a different outside lab, ANTECH Diagnostic.

ANTECH specializes in lab work from veterinary clinics, making their services cost a lot less than other labs that conduct various types of testing and analysis.

The switch is saving Powell a lot of money, and that savings is now being passed on to Powell's clients.

"That senior profile before was $200 and it's only $110 now," said Walker.

Before the new policy, Powell was only testing one to two profiles per week. Now, they perform more than five per day.

Dr. Walker said it's great news, because annual bloodwork helps them catch any underlying health problems that would otherwise go undetected.

"We did a senior profile on her and found out she is in renal failure. Cat was acting fine at home, but now we're able to get her better quicker. She may have gotten really bad and we may not have been able to save her," said Dr. Walker, speaking about a cat that was brought into the clinic this week.

"Dogs and cats can't tell us when they're hurting," said Dr. Walker. "We care a lot about animals and we want to make sure the human-animal bond is kept for as long as possible."
