German family's request for asylum to homeschool children denied

CINCINNATI, Ohio (WATE) - A German family who sought asylum in the U.S. to homeschool their children was denied that chance in a federal appeals court.

The Romeike family moved to Tennessee from Germany after they got into trouble with officials there for not sending their children to public or private school.

In Germany, parents do not have the option to homeschool their children.

The couple wanted to teach their children themselves for religious reasons, so they moved to Morristown.

In 2010, a lower court denied their request for asylum, but the ruling was overturned in 2011.

On Tuesday, a U.S Court of Appeals in Ohio again denied their request, saying it was not a case of religious persecution.
