KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The city of Knoxville is partnering with area businesses to help breastfeeding mothers feel more welcome.

Mayor Madeline Rogero along with the Knox County Health Department announced the "Breastfeeding Welcomed Here" pledge program Wednesday in Market Square.

They are committed to creating a comfortable environment for nursing mothers, and to also educate workers on Tennessee law on the issue.

"Especially here in Knox County, most of our moms stop breastfeeding when they hit six months, so by creating a community that are supportive of breastfeeding mothers, we're helping moms feel that support and hopefully they'll continue breastfeeding longer," said Sherri Hedberg of the East Tennessee Breastfeeding Coalition.

More than 20 businesses and organizations have already signed it and will have signs showing they support the program.
