MADISONVILLE (WATE) - Authorities in Monroe County are on the search for the person who stole a flag from a veteran's memorial.

Investigators believe the theft happened at the Veterans Flag Memorial in Madisonville on Memorial Day evening, sometime between 9 p.m. Monday and 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The massive American flag is 60 feet by 30 feet and weighs more than 60 pounds.

The city had an extra flag, so they were able to replace it quickly. Still, many people are angry someone would choose to steal something from the memorial.

"It behooves me someone would steal Old Glory," said resident Leo Suchy. "So many men have given up their lives."

"It breaks my heart," said resident Wayne Bevins. "I couldn't believe someone would do something like that. I don't understand."

The city of Madisonville is offering a $5,000 reward for an arrest in the case.

Police officials say this is the first time the flag has ever been stolen since it was installed 10 years ago.

Frederick Greb, a Vietnam veteran and the DAV chapter 93 commander, said the memorial means a lot more than people realize.

"To me, it's more of a personal insult," said Greb. "I think it's a personal insult to a lot of veterans, as well as the people of Madisonville and Monroe County."

Greb hopes the person responsible will be caught.

"I'm trying to search in my own mind the rational," said Greb. "Why someone would ever take that flag? I don't know where they would put it. What they would do with it? If it was out of hate for America I would ask you to fold it up neatly and drop it at the border when you leave."

The American flag that was stolen was worth $1,700.

If you have any information about who took the flag, you are asked to call the Madisonville Police Department at (423) 442-2268.
