OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (WATE) - Tennessee struck for three runs in the first inning and survived a Florida threat in the fourth, pulling away for a 9-2 win in their College World Series opener in Oklahoma City.
Melissa Brown blasted a bases-loaded double to deep center field scoring two runs to give Tennessee a 3-0 lead.
Florida closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth on a Stephanie Tofft single.
But the Lady Vols exploded in the sixth inning.
Leading 4-2, with two runners on base, Kat Dotson doubled to right pushing Tennessee's lead to 6-2. Lauren Gibson followed with a two-run double to extend the Lady Vols lead to 9-2.
Tennessee pitcher Ellen Renfroe gave up just four hits and two earned runs. She struck out nine batters and improved to 18-4 on the season.
The Lady Vols won their World Series opener for the fifth time in six visits to Oklahoma City.
Tennessee advances in the winner's bracket and will face Washington on Friday night.
