FARRAGUT (WATE) – Despite the rain, the family of Channon Christian held their annual golf tournament Sunday with a large crowd.

Channon and her boyfriend, Chris Newsom, were murdered in 2007.

Each year since the tragedy the foundation has given a female Farragut High School student going to the University of Tennessee a $5,000 scholarship.

This year though, they took it up a notch, giving two young women scholarships. Emma Stedham and Heathers Sauders were each awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Both Farragut High School students start at UT in the Fall.

"Well I think this is a great tribute to what she was to the community," said Emma Stedham, about being awarded the money.

Both girls hope to continue Channon's legacy of service.

"Channon was all about helping. I want to be a nurse. And she (Sauders) wants to be a teacher," she added.

"Even in the rain they're out here to play," said Channon's mother, Deena Christian, about the large number of people who came out despite all the rain.

Many playing knew Channon and say this is not just about honoring her memory, but supporting the people she leaves behind.

"It's a little wet, but we're having a good time. I knew Channon as a little girl," said Bill Osborne, who plays in the tournament every year.

For Channon's parents, it's some solace in a tragedy they'll never really recover from.

"We make something positive come out of the situation. It's a good way to remember her each year," Deena Christian said.
