KNOXVILLE (WATE) - East Tennesseans joined a celebration across the country Sunday. It was a celebration of life and a way to show support for those battling cancer.

Cancer survivors, along with their families and doctors were at UT Medical Center to recognize those with the disease.

"It's a long hard journey, but we all made it, we're all part of a group nobody wants to be part of it, but here were are," cancer survivor Lisa McDevitt said.

McDevitt went through two bouts of cervical cancer. She says she has Dr. Larry Kilgore to thank for saving her life.

"They said it would be back by now, but my doctor wasn't going to let that happen," McDevitt said.

Kilgore says it's the hospital's way of dealing with patients that makes all the difference.

"We can kind of re-focus, get away from the office, get away from the surgery suites, and the chemo and radiation, and see each other as just fellow human beings," Kilgore said.

"I can't thank the people at UT enough," McDevitt said. "They gave me more time. And that's what I needed."

Sunday marks the 26th year National Cancer Survivor's Day has been observed.
