PIONEER (WATE) – A Campbell County mother has a warning for all parents. She says a man tried to abduct her six-year-old daughter outside their home.

The alleged abduction happened early Tuesday evening in the small town of Pioneer in Campbell County.

Elaine Austin says it's terrifying to think that in just a few minutes, her daughter, Skylee, could have been taken away from her forever.

Skylee was outside her home picking honeysuckles when she says a man in a dirty white van pulled up to her.

"He grabbed my fingers and squeezed them really hard.," she described.

Skylee ran in and told her mother, Elaine Austin. Neighbors say they did see a white van speed away from the area.

"You'd never think it would happen up here. It's an eye opener, because you would never think it," Elaine Austin said.

Campbell County detectives are investigating the attempted abduction.

"We're still following different things and putting the puzzle together to see if we can in fact come up with a concrete suspect," said Chief Deputy Aaron Evans, with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office.

So far, they have mostly just the young girls description of the man to work with.

"He had red hair, black sunglasses, a red beard and a black shirt on," Skylee said.

In the meantime, Skylee's mother tells us the whole thing has left her child pretty shaken up.

"She's afraid to go to her room. Last night she had nightmares that he came back," Elaine described.

She wants all parents to be a little extra cautious.

"If he's going to try it once, why not try it again. The next kid may not be so lucky," Elaine said.

Because Pioneer is a small area, word of this man in a white van spread quickly. Someone said in the area said they thought they spotted the vehicle.

In fact they fired shots at a man in a white van.

However, detectives do not believe that man in a white van had any connection to this attempted abduction.
