Nuclear Regulatory Commission steps up oversight at Watts Bar

CHATTANOOGA (WATE) - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is stepping up oversight at Watts Bar Nuclear Plant after questions were raised about the Tennessee Valley Authority's precautions for an extreme flooding event.

This all stems from a higher estimates for the levels of a probable maximum flood - an event TVA says would be extremely rare.

It prompted TVA to add wire baskets filled with gravel at four area dams, raising their levels by several feet.

The higher estimate also affected emergency plans at nuclear plants, but a test showed TVA could not carry out the plan in time, or at least not the first time it was tried.

The NRC said TVA has made adequate measures to make sure flooding is not a current safety concern, but the commission wants to be certain the issue is addressed on a long term basis.
