KPD introduces new unit to patrol greenways

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville police officers now have a new beat.

The Knoxville Police Department has created a new division called the Parks and Greenways Patrol Unit.

Nine officers, led by Sgt. Sammy Shaffer, will patrol 128 park and greenway locations within city limits, mostly by bicycle.

"This patrol unit ensures that with our 85-mile trail system and over 2,000 acres of park space, we have the ability to respond to emergencies even on remote trails," said Mayor Madeline Rogero in a news release.

The unit will enforce park and greenway rules, assisting injured greenway users, reporting safety issues for repair and even removing graffiti.

The unit first started patrolling the greenways on June 3, 2012.

Mayor Rogero Chief David Rausch made the announcement Thursday at Tyson Park and the Third Creek Greenway.
