House fire kills 4 in Carthage, more injured

CARTHAGE (AP) - A fire in a home in Carthage has killed four people and injured five others.

Fire officials say the blaze started at around 11:40 p.m. Saturday night, and emergency crews showed up shortly after.

Carthage Fire Chief Joe Hiett tells WSMV-TV in Nashville that flames were burning through the roof when emergency officials arrived.

Hiett says two adults and two children were killed in the fire. 2 of the injured were flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center.

WKRN-TV reports that two people were released from a hospital Sunday morning. One firefighter was also taken to the hospital after a brick wall collapse, but the injuries weren't serious.

Hiett says the fire likely started in the basement or the back of the house. Officials have not determined the cause.
