KNOXVILLE (WATE) - If you are looking for ideas to keep your kids entertained this summer, Melissa Cox has some suggestions that are either cheap or free.

Summer Movie Programs are in full swing this week at local Regal Cinemas, Carmike Cin­e­mas and Cinemark.

Regal Cin­e­mas - Sum­mer Movie Express is Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Admission is just $1 to specially-scheduled G and PG movies. Participating theatres in the Knoxville area are Knoxville Center Stadium 10, West Town Mall Stadium 9 and Pinnacle Stadium 18.

Cinemark - Movies are scheduled each Wednesday at 10 a.m. Admission for 10 shows for $5 or $1 each to specially-scheduled G and PG movies. Cinemark Tinseltown USA in Oak Ridge is participating.

Carmike Cin­e­mas - Thursday is when Carmike schedules kids movies. They start at 10 a.m. A $4 admission includes popcorn, a drink and a snack for each person to G and PG movies. Wynnsong 16 and Carmike 10 participate.

Keep your kids engaged in reading with these programs:

Barnes and Noble - Children who read any eight books and record them in their Reading Journal
can take the completed Reading Journal to their local Barnes & Noble store. There they can chose a free book from the Reading Journal list at the store.

Chuck E. Cheese - Children can track their reading through the rewards calendars. Once they have completed two weeks of reading children can submit the completed Chuck E Cheese calendar for 10 free tokens.

Knox County Public Library Summer Library Club - Register as a Reader or a Listener at any library location. Readers read for 15 hours. Listeners (for those not quite reading yet) listen to 30 books being read to them. Pick up a reading log at any library location or download one (for Readers or Listeners). Take the completed log back to the library to pick up a prize. Prizes can be picked up June 11-July 31.

Safety City - From June 10 to July 29, 2013, Safety City will be open to the public on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. These special public hours/days will only be in effect through the months of June and July. Families may bring their own bikes with helmets, battery-powered cars, non-motorized scooters (no skateboards), doll buggies or walking shoes to Safety City to have open riding and play. Safety City will be open as a park on these days. There are two playgrounds with picnic areas adjacent to Safety City: one toddler and one designed for children ages 5-9. Safety City will be closed the week of July 1.

Beyond a Brick™ - This program helps bring the classroom alive with stimulating, media rich, dynamic, interactive content. Their STEM education solutions enable educators to cover a wide range of curriculum targets within science, technology, engineering and math in a fun, hands-on, and engaging way.

The LEGO™-based solutions are designed to stimulate children's creativity, problem-solving and team-working skills. Students can explore problems and invent their own solutions. They can behave as young scientists and technical investigators, making their own discoveries all the way.

Beyond a Brick™ is offering Summer Camps throughout June, July and August in various Knoxville locations. Classes are also offered in Oak Ridge and Jefferson City. The camps are for varying levels and promise to be full of fun and education.

National Fitness Center - Camps including swim camps are available in Knoxville, Maryville, Oak Ridge, and Morristown. Each week kids, ages 5-12, can explore a variety of sports, arts and fitness activities. The camps are designed to meet every kids' level of ability, from basic skills to competitive challenges. With such a wide range of themes, there's something for every kid.
