KNOXVILLE (WATE) - An inmate that escaped a work detail in Bledsoe County was captured in Knox County Monday morning.

According to WTVC-TV, Thomas Masengale escaped from the Bledsoe County Jail around 5:40 a.m. CST on Monday.

Masengale was reportedly on a work detail when he fled in a patrol car and headed towards Knox County.

Just a few hours later with the aid of tracking devices, officials caught up with Masengale near the Knox County and Anderson County line at a KenJo convenience store on Clinton Highway.

He was taken back to Bledsoe County to continue serving his sentence.

Masengale is serving time after being convicted on three counts of using worthless checks and three counts of theft of property. His sentence ends in 2025.

Masengale has a lengthy police record, with 21 convictions reaching as far back as 1992.

Officials said he is a state inmate, but is serving his time at the Bledsoe County Jail.
