Knox church extends welcome to Boy Scouts after SBC controversy

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knoxville church says all Boy Scouts are welcome in their church.

The church is reaching out to scouts after the Southern Baptist Convention voted to oppose the Boy Scouts of America's decision to allow gay scouts.

Rev. Drew Prince, senior pastor of West Hills Baptist Church, issued an invitation to any troop should their church sever relations with Boy Scouts of America.

"Our congregation has a long tradition of supporting the Boy Scouts," said Rev. Prince. "We expect to continue that relationship long into the future."

The SBC says they are not recommending their congregations drop ties with scouts, but that it does express support for families that decide to do so.

The SBC also encourages members to work toward reversing the new membership policy.

West Hills Baptist Church is located on Winston Road across from the West Knoxville YMCA.
