Fireworks a go for Fourth of July in Athens

ATHENS (WATE) - An outpouring of support from the community means fireworks will once again shine bright over Athens this Independence Day.

After Comcast dropped out as the main sponsor of the event, city officials were forced to cancel the event because they couldn't afford the show.

But residents came together in an effort to raise the money themselves and the city said the show could still go on if funds were raised in time.

Though a large sum was raised, they still needed additional funds to secure the display by June 16.

On Thursday, the city announced that three businesses had donated the remaining amounts, ensuring that there will be fireworks this Fourth of July.

Athens Insurance, Denso and Dynasty Spas are all title sponsors for the 2013 show.

"This has been just an unbelievable community effort," said Austin Fesmire Director of Parks and Recreation. "The best phone call I made this week was to Pyro Shows telling them to load the truck for Athens."
