Smokies officials rescue hiker trapped under fallen tree

COSBY (WATE) - A Blackhawk helicopter rescued a 53-year-old hiker on Friday night after a tree fell on him Thursday, trapping him overnight in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The man told park officials he was hiking on the Low Gap trail near campsite 43 on the North Carolina side of the park when a tree fell on him around 4 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, a park official reached the man and reported that he appeared to be in stable condition.

Early Friday afternoon, officials were still trying to decide how best to get him out of the park.

A Blackhawk helicopter airlifted the man around 7 p.m. Friday.

An ambulance took him to Mission Hospital for treatment.
