JACKSBORO (WATE) - A Campbell County mother and daughter were arrested Thursday for asking for donations for a local school, but pocketing the money instead.

Catherine Agee, 61, and her daughter, Jennifer Overton, 34, both of Jacksboro, reportedly asked local businesses to write checks directly to them, ostensibly to raise money for a school function and fundraiser at Jacksboro Middle School.

School officials said they had no knowledge of the fundraiser and did not give permission to use the school's name.

The women were arrested and charged with theft and criminal impersonation. Agee was also charged with an additional count of theft.

The Campbell County Sheriff's Office is telling residents that want to donate in the future to call the school and to make sure the checks are written out directly to the school.

"Criminal acts against our children or our schools will not be tolerated, period," said Sheriff Robbie Goins.

"We don't want our business owners and citizens to stop helping kids school functions and sports programs at the detriment of a few who choose to prey on the vulnerable feelings of so many who help in our community. As long as I am sheriff we will vigilantly pursue, investigate and arrest these people."
