Today’s forecast is just about “picture perfect”. We will see plenty of sunshine, light wind, low relative humidity values and highs right about where we should be for this time of year, so please enjoy it! The area of high pressure giving us this nice day will slowly drift eastward on Monday, but we should still see a lot of sunshine and temperatures in the low-mid 70s. It doesn’t last though as a cold front pushes into the area on Tuesday producing widespread showers and even a few thunder...More >>

SEVIERVILLE (WATE) - A National Weather Service crew confirmed Friday afternoon that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Sevier County Thursday.

The tornado was spawned from a storm that brought strong winds and heavy rains into much of East Tennessee Thursday afternoon.

Weather officials said the EF-1 tornado reached wind speeds of 90 mph along its half-mile long path.

Dozens of trees were down Friday, from the Sevier/Cocke County line to Cosby.

The storm produced mostly tree damage, but there were some near misses, too, including one Sevier County family who lost the roof on their home.

In Charles Williams' yard in Cosby, you could see two distinct types of damage. One is the trees with the tops just twisted right off and lower on some of the trunks was visible damage from lightning strikes.

"A lot of wind and rain was coming down, just pure white," Williams said. "You couldn't even see ten feet inside the house out on the front. The tree tops were jerked out. Tore down fences, tore down my well house. Damaged my car and truck. I got about 13 trees down."

Crews were out since the storm hit, trying to get roads cleared and power restored.

George Mathews with the National Weather Service said the damage was hit or miss in a heavily wooded, which made it harder to determine if a tornado in fact had touched down.
