UT football honored for sportsmanship

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Even the most optimistic Tennessee football fans will agree not much went right last season.

But sports goes beyond wins and losses and what the Vols did during the South Carolina game in 2012 has been recognized in a positive way.

It happened when Gamecock running back Marcus Lattimore went down with a serious knee injury. It was so bad, Lattimore's season was over and some feared his career might be finished too.

Immediately after the injury, Tennessee players gathered on the field with South Carolina players-- showing their support for Lattimore.

On Monday, the Vols and Gamecocks were among those named recipients of the SEC sportsmanship award.

"Sportsmanship, civility and societal responsibility are things that will  lead to victories throughout the course of life, SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a statement.

"I congratulate the University of South Carolina and the University of Tennessee football teams for this prestigious honor, and for being committed to athletic excellence and overall excellence."
