KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A witness told Knox County sheriff's investigators she overheard the parents of a six-month-old baby girl arguing moments before the infant was shot, the sheriff's office said Thursday.

According to new information released by the sheriff's office, Ashley Kilpatrick was inside the house at the time of the shooting.

She told deputies the baby's parents, Ken Mason, 40, and Angela Major, 26, were arguing over a handgun Wednesday afternoon when it went off.

The baby was at the feet of the parents when they got into a physical struggle in their home over the handgun. It fired, striking Mason in the hand and the baby in the head.

Mason and Major are now facing charges of reckless homicide in their infant daughter's death.

According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, both have an extensive criminal history.

Friend defends Major

"That little girl meant everything to Angela," Major's friend Christen Brown told 6 News.

Brown said despite the deadly shooting, she believes Major never intended to harm the baby.

Brown said Major lost custody of four other children and does not have visitation rights.

"She was a good mom to Kelsey," Brown said. "I know everyone's going to bash her for losing her other kids and for what happened, but it's not how it is."
