MARYVILLE (WATE) - A 91-year-old World War II veteran received a long overdue honor Thursday night in Blount County.

Some 68 years after his military service, Charles Lawson, Jr. was presented with a Purple Heart medal.

The honor signifies being wounded or killed in action.

Lawson served in the U.S. Army and was wounded in action on December 19, 1944.

He says the recognition just adds to the wonderful life he's lived.

"It's been a good life," Lawson said. "The good Lord's been good to me. He's the one that got me through it all. Only thing is I hate that my wife's not still around to see this, but she's seeing it from heaven."

Lawson credits the Veterans Affairs office for working hard to make the honor happen.
