KNOXVILLE (WATE) A local mechanic says fuel additives advertised at the fuel pump are a waste of money.

Jim Ray is the manager of Transmission World in West Knoxville.

Like many people, Ray has noticed more advertisements for fuel additives when filling up.

He thinks they're a waste of money. "The amount of liquid that's being put into the fuel system at the pump is very negligible."

He says there are good fuel additives you can buy for your car, but the best way to get the most for your money is to buy a product at the store -- not the fuel pump.

6 News also spoke to several drivers filling up in North Knoxville. No one we talked with had ever used the fuel additive, but were skeptical about its effectiveness.

"They're not any good," said Helen Johnson. "A lot of it depends on your car. If you keep it well tuned, keep the spark plugs working right, then you're going to get good mileage."

Additech is one of the companies that sell a fuel additive at area gas stations. We tried to contact them, but the company never responded to our request for comment.
