OAK RIDGE (WATE) - A small fire was reported at Oak Ridge National Laboratory late Sunday night, but it was quickly extinguished.

A Department of Energy press release says an Alert Condition was issued around 11:45 p.m. at building 7880 when a fire alarm and sprinkler system went off one of the rooms in the TRU Waste Processing Center.

The building is used to treat environmental waste from the lab.

"It deals with waste that had been generated going back many many years, almost to the Manhattan Project," said Department of Energy Oak Ridge Public Affairs Director John Shewairy.

It's believed a thunderstorm caused a power outage Saturday evening which caused the building's ventilation system to shut down.

"They use a number of heaters and one of the heaters in a room, after the ventilation system went down, overheated," said Shewairy. "It caused some smoking and some insulation started to overheat and that triggered an alarm to the Oak Ridge National Lab fire department."

Crews arrived within minutes and determined there was no fire, despite a sprinkler system being set off.

No one was injured and no radioactive or hazardous material was released.

"There was absolutely no release of any contamination whether is radiological or any other types of hazardous materials," said Shewairy. "There was no material in jeopardy in this particular location where the smoke was."

The all-clear was given around 4:45 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation.

The TRU Waste Processing Center is managed by the Oak Ridge Emergency Management Site Office and is operated by Wastren Advantage Inc.
