JACKSBORO (WATE) – It's a sign that gets your attention on busy Jacksboro Pike in Jacksboro. It reads "Church Fireworks, No Tax."

6 News visited the fireworks tent after a viewer asked how the business was able to sell fireworks without charging sales tax.

With Christian music softly playing inside the tent, Danny Ray from Pentecostal Worship Center in Spring City was helping customers, with a greater goal of helping the needy.

The Jacksboro mayor says the business is doing everything by the book. The church uses proceeds from fireworks sales for their charity work.

"We feed the less fortunate and homeless once a month. If someone disabled needs a ramp built, we'll go from the church, buy the materials and build a ramp for them," Ray said, explaining some of their charity work.

In addition to not charging taxes, everything at the tent is buy one get one free.

"In the state of Tennessee, you can do two fundraisers a year that are tax exempt for the church. We chose fireworks. There's good profit in it, and you can sell it cheap to customers," Ray explained.

In the first five days the fireworks store was open, a number of customers have already stopped by. Ben and Connie were shopping because they'll have their grandchildren over for the 4th of July holiday.

"We figured the more we got, the more we could shoot and the more fun they would have," Ben said.

"To me it's unique, and a really good fundraiser," Ray said.

This is the second year the church has set up this tent in Jacksboro. It was a huge success last year, so they did it again.
