KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Chocolate is one of life's guilty pleasures, but one local man clearly believes it doesn't have to be.
In fact, the chocolate he is making is fortified with vitamins, green tea extracts, raspberry ketones and may be the perfect supplement to your workout routine.
Eddie Reymond, the creator of Elite Dark Chocolate, sells the goodies at his store The Health Shoppe in West Knoxville.
"The concept started about four years ago," he said. "My friend and I decided to come up with a product to compete with energy drinks."
That idea, along with working with a local chocolate maker, led to Elite Dark Chocolate's first treat: the Energy Chocolate.
Nowadays, Reymond and his crew have converted his West Knox County home into a factory where they make and package all the chocolates by hand, but they turned to customers at Eddie's store to help perfect the flavors.
"It started out just here," Reymond said. "Nine months ago is when we started and we wanted to get feedback first, so it was great that I had this store to get feedback."
Elite Dark Chocolate comes in three varieties: Energy, Vitamin D and Fit.
Vice President of Sales Mike Wright says the ingredients in the treats are all natural, like ginseng, and at just 45 calories a piece, have no hidden sugars.
Wright says customers have raved about the chocolates.
"Within 24 hours, you get response that they love this product," he said. "We love this energy. You don't crash. You feel good!"
Right now, with the possible health benefits, these could be great additions or supplements to healthy eating and a workout routine.
And with their rapidly growing popularity they expect to possibly roll out other chocolates in the future.
"We have several formulations on the drawing board. We actually discussing in the future doing a sleep chocolate. That is something we have seen interest in," Reymond said.
Bags of Elite Dark Chocolate sell from $24.99 to $30.00. You can find them in variety of stores here in Knoxville, in several states and online.
