KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Charges are pending against a driver who fled the scene of a traffic stop and led troopers on a chase Wednesday night.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, troopers were conducting a seatbelt checkpoint on Interstate 75 at the Callahan Drive exit in Knox County as part of the "I-75 Stay Alive Blitz" campaign.

Authorities say a trooper stopped a pickup truck with two occupants for seatbelt violations. While the trooper ran a check on the driver's license, passenger David L. Foster, 24, got behind the wheel and drove off.

State troopers pursued Foster to Callahan and Keck Drive, about a mile from the traffic stop. THP says he crashed into a wooded area there.

Foster was taken to the hospital as a precaution and then to Knox County Jail.

The first driver was cited driving with a suspended license and seatbelt violation.

Foster is facing charges of driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, resisting arrest, evading arrest in a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless endangerment.
