KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Fruit flies and cockroaches are not the kind of company you want to keep when you're dining out, but that's what health inspectors came across on their recent sweep of local restaurants.

Just two area restaurants fell below the passing mark of 70 this week.

Lowest Score:

San Juan de Los Lagos Bar and Grill, 703 Cherry Street - Grade: 52

There were fruit flies at the hot water heater in the bar area and a live cockroach was spotted in the bar area.

Refried beans, beef and sour cream were being stored at 64 degrees. That is too warm. The inspector notes 50 pounds had to be thrown out by management.

Other low scores:

Willy's Bar and Grill, 2600 Whitten Lane - Grade: 67

Here, the inspector spotted hand soap stored with food items.

Milk was stored at 44 degrees, but the proper temperature is 41 and below.

Also, the kitchen exterior door was not self-closing.

Top Scores:

  • Papa John's, 6213 Riverview Crossing - Grade: 100
  • Green's Tavern, 9307 Kingston Pike - Grade: 98
  • Snappy Tomato, 10612 Hardin Valley Road - Grade: 98
  • Marco's Pizza, 8667 Middlebrook Pike - Grade: 97
  • Zhu Garden, 1205 Peters Road - Grade: 97
  • Auggies N' Doggies, 5305 Maywood Road - Grade: 97
  • Sapphire, 428 Gay Street - Grade: 96
  • Altruda's, North Peters Road - Grade: 96

These were not the only restaurants scoring in the 90s. There were a total 24 that were 90 and above!

Congratulations to all those managers and their employees.
