KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A couple involved in a North Knoxville car accident ended up in jail on new and existing drug charges Wednesday night.

Ty-shonna Sligh, 24, and Thomas Byrd, 35, were in an altercation and crash at the intersection of Broadway and Old Broadway.

When police arrived at the scene, an officer recognized Sligh as the victim in a domestic assault that was reported two weeks prior on June 15.

In that incident, Sligh alleged that her boyfriend had shot at her at a home on Hoitt Avenue.

While investigating that domestic violence call, police found evidence of drugs and obtained a search warrant.

With the warrant, officers found half an ounce of crack cocaine, half an ounce of powder cocaine, half an ounce of marijuana, $1,200 in cash, a .25 caliber pistol and a .40 caliber Sig Sauer pistol that was found to have been reported stolen in Blount County.

Though evidence implicated Sligh, she did not cooperate with the domestic violence investigation and had already left the scene when police arrived.

On Wednesday, the man involved in the accident initially gave a false name, but officers determined that Byrd was the suspect from the domestic violence incident.

He was arrested on an aggravated assault charge that stemmed from that June 15 incident.

At the time of his arrest, police found several crack cocaine rocks, a small amount of marijuana, Oxycodone, and Alprazolam, as well as $1,251 in cash, on his person.

Sligh was also arrested on drug charges stemming from the June 15 incident.

Once Byrd and Sligh were in custody, evidence in their car led officers to a hotel room at the Express Inn on Dante Road.

After obtaining a search warrant for their room, officers found a quarter of an ounce of crack cocaine, half an ounce of marijuana, a .45 caliber Sig Sauer P220 that was found to be stolen in Knox County and digital scales and baggies.

Byrd now faces charges of aggravated assault, possession of Schedule II and IV drugs for resale, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, simple possession, and possession in a drug free school zone.

Sligh face charges of possession of Schedule II and IV drugs for resale and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

KPD says more charges are pending for the drugs found at the hotel.
