Judge denies George Thomas new trial, sentence

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Christian-Newsom defendant George Thomas was denied a third trial by a judge on Tuesday.

Thomas' attorney asked for a new trial or an acquittal for his client, saying there was insufficient evidence to convict his client.

Judge Walter Kurtz reviewed the evidence in the case, saying it supported the verdict. He also said that he affirmed the ruling as thirteenth juror.

Kurtz then overruled the motion for a new trial, new sentenced and acquittal.

Had he been approved, Thomas would have gone to trial for a third time for torture, rape and murder of Knoxville couple Channon Christian and Chris Newsom.

The couple was killed in January 2007.
